Characters

Kriemhild-Portrait-Sheet-EPOS

Kriemhild

A young, enchanting woman, first the Princess of Worms and later the Queen of Xanten. She experiences numerous injustices over the course of the musical. Starting out as an innocent girl, she develops into a powerful woman by the end of the story. She puts everything on the line and even sacrifices her life to avenge her husband's death and bring the men responsible to justice.

Brünhild

Brünhild is a Valkyrie and the ruling queen of Iceland. Combining striking beauty with majestic stature, she embodies both leadership and warrior strength. Initially an invincible force, Brünhild's invulnerability suffers a setback when she is betrayed, deceived, and humiliated. This trial drains her of spirit and power, with partial revival through an act driven by vengeance. Eventually, like Kriemhild, she too recognizes the shared wrongs done to them by the same men. This realization marks a turning point.

Siegfried-Portrait-Sheet-EPOS

Siegfried

Siegfried embodies the archetypal image of the "pretty boy" with his tall, strong stature and blond hair. Despite his role as a conventional hero in the original story, he is under scrutiny in EPOS due to his extremely questionable actions.

Hagen

Hagen, who secretly rules Worms, silently guides the three ineffective kings through their reigns. He hides a secret passion and harbors an unrequited love for Kriemhild. He is aware that even if she were to give up her vows, she would never choose him. Siegfried embodies everything Hagen detests, and as the musical progresses, Hagen's nature takes a darker turn as he constantly tries to justify his actions. Unlike the archetypal hero, the jet-black man bears battle scars and exudes a melancholic aura.

Gunther-Portrait-Sheet-EPOS

Gunther

Gunther, the King of Worms, shares the crown with his two younger siblings but struggles to exercise effective rule. He seems strangely unconcerned by Hagen's secret rule of the kingdom, but he struggles with his own insecurities about his stature and lack of heroic qualities. By marrying Brunhild, he seeks to overcome his "little man syndrome."

Giselher

The youngest and biggest brother of the group is naive but has a good heart.

Gernot-Portrait-Blatt-EPOS

Gernot

Gunther's brother is equally incapable of bearing the weight of the crown. As the middle sibling, he tends to simply go with the flow.

Ute

The queen's mother is a wise woman who strives to protect her daughter from a fate similar to hers. She knows the position of a woman at the side of a king, and Kriemhild's dream also worries her greatly. However, when Kriemhild falls in love with Siegfried, Ute must also learn to let go. Nevertheless, she urges Kriemhild never to underestimate her own power.
